Approximately 94.5% of Malaysian adults experience gum health issues, with the prevalence rising to an alarming 96% among adults aged 35 to 44. Even more concerning, 38.2% of Malaysian adults are affected by periodontitis, a serious form of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

What is Periodontitis?

Periodontal disease encompasses a range of gum diseases, from gingivitis to periodontitis, caused by bacteria in dental plaque. If plaque is not removed regularly, it leads to gingivitis—characterized by red, swollen gums—which can be reversed with proper oral care and professional cleaning. Without treatment, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where bacteria multiply and produce toxins, resulting in bone and tissue destruction, potentially leading to tooth loss. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition requiring ongoing treatment and management.
Risk factors for periodontitis include age, stress, genetics, smoking, and systemic diseases. Symptoms may not always include bleeding or pain, making yearly periodontal examinations essential for early detection and prevention.

MANAGEMENT OF DENTAL IMPLANT COMPLICATIONS

Peri-Implant Disease is avoidable and treatable if detected early. Early diagnosis can help save an infected implant and regenerate lost bone and tissue. Treatment typically involves surgical debridement, disinfection, bone and gum regeneration, antibiotics, deep cleaning, or laser therapy.

NON SURGICAL PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

Scaling and Root Planing treats early gum disease by removing plaque, calculus, and bacteria — promoting healing and reducing pockets with minimal discomfort over a few sessions.

GUIDED BONE REGENERATION

Guided Bone Regeneration (GTR) treats bone loss from gum disease and prepares the jaw for implants. After cleaning, a membrane is placed to block soft tissue, allowing bone to regenerate. This helps stabilize teeth and supports future implant placement.

CROWN LENGTHENING

Crown Lengthening exposes more of the tooth by removing excess gum and bone.
It’s done to repair damage below the gum line or to correct a gummy smile — restoring function and enhancing aesthetics, often with same-day, painless results.

GUM TISSUE GRAFTING

Gum Tissue Grafting treats gum recession, which can cause sensitivity, looseness, or tooth loss. Tissue from the roof of the mouth or a donor is used to restore and strengthen the gum line. Grafting is typically recommended for recession over 2mm, especially to protect front teeth and enhance the smile.

Clinical Cases

  • Will I feel pain during or after root canal treatment?
Dental implants are placed in the jaw where a tooth or teeth have been lost. The process involves surgically inserting the implant, which then integrates with the bone over 2-3 months. Once fully integrated, a custom crown or prosthesis is created and placed on the implant.
  • Step-by-step Endodontic procedure
Immediate implant placement refers to placing a dental implant right after tooth extraction, followed by a period of osseointegration lasting 3-6 months. However, this approach is not suitable for every situation. Immediate loading involves placing a final crown on the implant immediately after placement, which is especially beneficial for front teeth in the aesthetic zone. Both procedures require the right conditions to be successful, so each case is carefully evaluated.
  • How much will the root canal procedure cost?
All-on-4/6 (Full Arch Dental Implant Therapy) uses 4/6 implants to support a full arch of prosthetic teeth. This procedure offers a stable, fixed alternative to dentures and typically allows for immediate placement of a temporary set.
  • Can a root treated tooth last forever?
Dental implants can last many years with proper oral hygiene and professional care. The implant crown may wear over time and may require repair or replacement. Certain conditions and habits can compromise its longevity, and our specialist periodontist will advise you on these risks.
  • What are the post-operative care after root canal treatment?
In the first 24 hours, avoid hot food and drinks, rigorous rinsing, straws, or sucking actions to prevent excessive bleeding. Stick to a soft diet and avoid strenuous activity for 3-7 days. Complete the prescribed course of anti-inflammatories, antibiotics (if necessary), and antiseptics.
  • Some holistic practitioners claimed that root canal treatment is dangerous. Is it true?
    no
