Veneer, Crown or Onlay? More Is Not Always Better
October 7, 2026Failed Root Canal? Can a Failed Root Canal Be Saved?
Before You Extract That Tooth, Know Your Options.
You've had a root canal treatment before. But now, the same tooth is hurting again, or your dentist has found an infection on the X-ray.
Does this mean the tooth needs to be removed?
Not necessarily. Your tooth may still have a second chance.
Why Do Root Canal Treatments Sometimes Fail?
Root canal treatment is designed to remove infection and preserve your natural tooth. However, problems can sometimes develop months or even years later.
Common reasons include:
Missed or untreated canals – Some teeth have complex root anatomy that can be difficult to detect.
Persistent or new infection – Bacteria may remain inside or re-enter the root canal system.
Leaking fillings or crowns – A compromised restoration may allow bacteria to enter.
Cracks or fractures – These can affect the tooth's long-term prognosis.
Can the Tooth Be Saved Again?
In some cases, root canal retreatment can give the tooth another opportunity to heal.
During retreatment, the existing root canal filling is removed, the canals are carefully reassessed, cleaned and disinfected, and the root canal system is sealed again.
However, not every tooth is suitable for retreatment.
The outcome depends on several factors, including the condition of the roots, remaining tooth structure, presence of fractures and extent of infection.
Why Consider a Specialist Assessment?
Retreatment is often more complex than the first root canal procedure.
An endodontist (root canal specialist) has advanced training in managing complex root canal problems. Magnification and advanced imaging, when indicated, can help identify issues that may otherwise be difficult to detect.
More importantly, a specialist assessment helps determine whether retreatment is worthwhile — or whether another treatment option would offer a more predictable outcome.
